Melbourne Film Night – Graphic Novels! Melbourne!

The Australian Book Designers Association invites ABDA members and friends in Melbourne to drinks and a free screening of Graphic Novels! Melbourne!

This film uncovers an energetic, diverse and productive comics culture on the streets of Melbourne. It investigates the life and work of four graphic novelists in particular: Pat Grant, Nicki Greenberg, Mandy Ord and Bruce Mutard.

There are also interviews with four international comic book luminaries: Scott McCloud, Shaun Tan, Dylan Horrocks and Paul Gravett, all of whom lend their perspective to the development of comics culture in Melbourne.

Director and graphic novelist Bernard Caleo will introduce the film and show some of the books featured in the film!

Annual General Meeting 2017

Notice of Annual General Meeting & Election of Committee.

The 2017 Annual General Meeting of the Australian Book Designers Association will be held on Tuesday 1 August 2017.

Time
6:30 pm – 7:30 pm (please arrive at 6:15pm to allow for recording attendance).

The ordinary business of the Annual General Meeting is:

(a) to receive and consider the annual report of the Committee and the financial statements for the preceding financial year;
(b) to elect the members of the Committee; and
(c) to confirm or vary the amounts of the annual subscription.

Only paid up members of ABDA may vote or be nominated. If you are unsure of your current membership status, please email info@abda.com.au with your details.

Proxy Vote
A financial member of the Association may appoint another financial member to vote on his or her behalf at the Annual General Meeting. A proxy form is available below for members who cannot attend the meeting. This includes Company members, if the person representing the Company is not the registered contact. Proxy forms must be received no later than 5pm on Friday 28 July 2017.

Absentee Vote
A financial member of the Association may vote for committee members in advance of the meeting by filling out the Absentee Voting form (to be circulated one week prior to the AGM, with the nominee statements).

Hand Lettering Typography Workshop

The Australian Book Designers Association invite ABDA members and friends in Melbourne to a Hand Lettering Typography Workshop for beginners.

During this four hour workshop, participants will learn how to master the brush pen with Eliza Svikulis of Melbourne lettering girl gang, The Letterettes.

Workshop participants will start with basic strokes and letter construction in upper and lowercase and practice subtle differences in style and layout to create tone for various applications.

A Josef Albers Showcase — Interaction of Colour

The Australian Book Designers Association invite ABDA members and friends in Sydney to a Joseph Albers Showcase — Interaction of Colour. Joseph Albers’s 1963 book Interaction of Color provided the most comprehensive analysis of the function and perception of color to date and profoundly influenced art education and artistic practice, especially Color Field painting and Minimalism, in the twentieth century. This showcase event will give ABDA members and friends the opportunity to view some of Albers’s limited edition silk screen prints and more.

The Australian Book Designers Association in partnership with the State Library Of Victoria, as part of Melbourne Rare Book Week, invite ABDA members and friends to a panel discussion exploring the art of book cover design in contemporary Australia. Featuring our expert panel of award winning designers (and ABDA members) Stuart Geddes, Regine Abos and Josh Durham, chaired by WH Chong, Design Director at Text Publishing and founding member of the Australian Book Design Association.

A Conversation with Gita Wolf in Melbourne

The Australian Book Designers Association invite you to a conversation with Gita Wolf. Gita established the independent publishing house Tara Books in Chennai, India in 1994. Tara Books is run as a collective and advocates that “design is not decoration or embellishment, but basic to how a book creates meaning.” In addition to publishing award winning books that encourage collaboration between writers, designers and artisans, Tara Books created a trust to support education and research as well as a bookmaking workshop that supports local artisans.
The event will include Gita showing two short films and a collection of books.

Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story depicts one man’s wild, lifelong adventure of testing societal boundaries through his use of subversive art. This 98-minute film combines traditional documentary storytelling with original animation from over 70 years worth of art from the renegade children’s book author and illustrator.

Design Inspired Rare Book Event in Sydney

The Australian Book Designers Association in partnership with the State Library of New South Wales invite ABDA members in Sydney to a special viewing highlighting some of the 20th century design resources available in the Library’s collection. Items on display will include the screen print for Martin Sharp’s psychedelic cover illustration for Oz featuring Bob Dylan and A specimen book of Pattern Papers designed for use at the Curwen Press, 1928.

Design Inspired Rare Book Event Melbourne
